Quick answer: According to the US State Department, US citizens traveling to Mozambique for tourism or business do not currently need a visa. You still need a passport valid for at least six months after arrival with two blank visa pages, proof of a round-trip flight and a hotel reservation, and the State Department notes an invitation letter is still required. You can stay up to 90 days in a year; stays longer than 30 days will likely need an extension from Mozambique's immigration service. If you are visiting a Mozambican citizen or resident, you need a visitor visa through the official e-visa platform (US State Department). Rules change often, so check the State Department page and Mozambique's official e-visa portal before you book.

Do US citizens need a visa for Mozambique?
For tourism or business: no, at this time. The State Department says no visa is currently required for US tourists and business travelers, noting the policy applies "at this time" because of problems with the e-visa website. Immigration officers decide how long you can stay when they stamp you in.
To visit a Mozambican citizen or resident: yes. You need a visitor visa, applied for on the e-visa platform (evisa.gov.mz) with a notarized support letter from your host and proof of your host's status in Mozambique.
How long can you stay?
- Up to 90 days in a year, in one trip or several.
- Trips longer than 30 days will likely need an extension approved by the provincial office of Mozambique's National Migration Service (Direcção Nacional de Migração), and fees may apply.
- Check the authorized period of stay stamped in your passport. It is separate from any visa validity dates, and overstays are fined per day.

Money rules
You must declare cash above US$5,000 or 10,000 meticais when you enter or leave. Bring a mix of a debit card, a credit card and some US dollars in good condition; ATMs are common in Maputo and larger towns but scarcer in rural areas. Mobile money (M-Pesa, e-Mola, mKesh) is widely used by Mozambicans.
Safety: the current travel advisory
The State Department's advisory for Mozambique is Exercise Increased Caution because of health issues, crime and terrorism, with stricter warnings for the far north:
- Do Not Travel to these districts of Cabo Delgado Province: Ancuabe, Chiúre, Ibo, Macomia, Meluco, Metuge, Mocímboa da Praia, Mueda, Muidumbe, Nangade, Palma and Quissanga.
- Reconsider Travel to Pemba, Cabo Delgado's capital.
