The Context
MBC Investment Portfolio is a cashew farm located in Mocuba, Zambézia province, Mozambique. MBC built a SHA-256 blockchain ledger with 114+ immutable blocks, creating transparent audit trails for $39,500 in funded capital across 5 investments — giving investors real-time transaction verification without trusting any intermediary.
The Challenge
Investors in Mozambican agriculture face an information asymmetry problem. Once capital is deployed, there is no transparent, real-time way to verify that funds reached the intended farmer, that the loan was used for its stated purpose, and that repayments are flowing back. Traditional audit reports are quarterly, opaque, and trust-based. Investors demanded a tamper-proof, real-time audit trail before committing larger ticket sizes.
The Implementation
MBC deployed a permissioned blockchain ledger using SHA-256 proof-of-work. Each block records: transaction ID, loan amount, farmer ID, NDVI score at approval, credit score at approval, timestamp, and previous block hash. The chain is immutable — once a block is written, it cannot be altered without breaking the hash chain. Investors receive a public view key that lets them independently verify their specific transactions on-chain without exposing other investors' data. The 114 blocks represent the complete history of MBC's capital deployment, from initial farmer scoring through milestone-based escrow releases. This transparency directly enabled the $125K committed in the current round.
