The Context
MBC Farmer Network is a maize farm located in Maputo, Maputo province, Mozambique. MBC processed 695,325 MZN ($10,950) across 7 mobile money transactions through M-Pesa rails, achieving 99.5% uptime and 24-hour settlement — proving that cross-border investor capital can reach unbanked farmers in under a day.
The Challenge
Investor capital needed to reach rural Mozambican farmers who have no bank accounts — only M-Pesa wallets. Traditional bank transfers take 5-7 business days, require SWIFT codes and intermediary banks, and charge 3-5% in fees. MBC needed a disbursement rail that could send USD-denominated investor capital to a farmer's M-Pesa wallet in MZN within 24 hours, at sub-1% cost, with full transaction traceability.
The Implementation
MBC integrated with Vodacom Mozambique's M-Pesa API to enable direct USD-to-MZN disbursement at the live exchange rate (63.5 MZN/USD). Investor capital enters MBC's escrow account in USD, is converted to MZN at the mid-market rate, and is disbursed directly to farmer M-Pesa wallets via API call. Each disbursement is logged as a SHA-256 blockchain block for immutable audit trail. The M-Pesa Velocity Index — measuring transaction frequency and volume — currently sits at 1/100, reflecting the early stage of the platform. As the harvest cycle completes and repayment flows begin, this index is projected to reach 40-60/100 within 6 months.
