Behind Every Number Is a Person
Maria's Story — Sofala Province
"Before the irrigation project, I could only grow maize during the rainy season — maybe 4 months a year. The rest of the time, my family struggled. When Maputo Bridge Capital funded our cooperative's irrigation system, everything changed. Now I grow tomatoes, onions, and cabbage year-round. I sell to three markets in Beira and earn three times what I used to. My eldest daughter is in school. We have a tin roof instead of grass. And I employ two other women from my village during harvest season."
The Beira Women's Cassava Cooperative
"Forty of us started with raw cassava, selling at the roadside for 20 cents per kilo. It was backbreaking work for almost no money. A $2,000 processing machine — funded by donations — changed everything. Now we turn cassava into flour that sells for 80 cents per kilo in Maputo. That's a 4x income increase. We've registered as a formal cooperative. We have a bank account. We're negotiating with two supermarkets. And we're training three neighboring villages to do the same."
Climate-Smart Farming in Nampula
"In 2025, the rains failed. Our maize withered. We had no backup plan — just hunger. This year, with drought-resistant seeds and a drip irrigation system funded by Maputo Bridge Capital donors, our community harvested even during the dry season. For the first time, we have surplus to sell — not just enough to survive. My children don't go to bed hungry anymore."
