Case Study: 9 Crops, 3 Districts, 1 Cooperative — How COJAZ Diversifies Risk
Cooperative: COJAZ (44 members)
Districts: Quelimane, Mocuba, Mugeba/Muaquiua
Crops: Milho, feijão boer, soja, gergelim, repolho, tomate, pimenta, pepino verde, arroz
Blockchain: Blocks #44-54
The Challenge
Mozambican agriculture is vulnerable to cyclones (Idai 2019, Freddy 2023), droughts, and floods. A farmer growing one crop in one location risks losing everything. Commercial crop insurance is either unavailable or unaffordable for smallholder farmers.
The Solution
COJAZ diversified across 3 dimensions:
Dimension 1 — Crops (9 types)
Different crops have different vulnerabilities. Maize needs rain. Cassava survives drought. Sesame is drought-tolerant. Rice needs flooding. Tomatoes need dry weather. If one fails, others survive.
Dimension 2 — Districts (3 locations)
Quelimane (coastal, wet), Mocuba (inland, moderate), Mugeba/Muaquiua (rural, fertile). Weather patterns differ across districts. A cyclone hitting Quelimane may not reach Mocuba.
Dimension 3 — Experience (2 levels)
3 founding members with 5 years experience mentor 41 newer members with 2 years. Knowledge transfers peer-to-peer. When experienced farmers teach newcomers, the whole cooperative gets stronger.
The Data
| District | # Farmers | Key Crops | Climate | |---|---|---|---| | Quelimane | 7 | Tomate, pimenta, arroz, milho | Coastal, wet | | Mocuba | 28 | Milho, soja, gergelim, feijão boer | Inland, moderate | | Mugeba/Muaquiua | 9 | Milho, tomate, repolho | Rural, fertile |
- Founding members: 3 (5 years experience each)
- Active members: 41 (2 years experience each)
- Members with M-Pesa: 16
- Members without phone: 28
- Total crop types: 9
- Total districts: 3
- Natural insurance: Yes (diversification)
Key Lesson
Diversification is free insurance. No insurance company, no premium, no paperwork. Just plant different crops in different places. If one fails, the cooperative survives. This is what 9 crops across 3 districts means — not chaos, but strategy.
