Edge Computing + Quantum: Bringing Quantum Power to Rural Mozambique

Quantum in the Village, Not the Data Center

Mozambican farmers don't have quantum computers. They have feature phones and 2G networks. But through edge computing combined with quantum cloud access, a farmer in rural Nampula can get quantum-powered credit scoring, crop disease diagnosis, and market price prediction in 2 seconds — without any quantum hardware at the edge.

The Architecture

The pipeline works as follows: A farmer sends a WhatsApp message or USSD code from their feature phone. The request travels over 2G to the nearest MBC collection hub edge server. The edge server performs classical preprocessing (data cleaning, feature extraction). The edge server sends only the quantum-critical computation to IBM Quantum Cloud. The quantum cloud returns the result in milliseconds. The edge server decodes the result and sends it back to the farmer's phone. Total round-trip: 2 seconds.

Edge Server Specifications

Each of MBC's 12 collection hubs hosts an edge server:

| Component | Specification | Cost | |-----------|--------------|------| | CPU | ARM Cortex-A78 (8-core) | $200 | | GPU | NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano | $500 | | RAM | 16GB DDR5 | $100 | | Storage | 512GB NVMe SSD | $80 | | Solar panel + battery | 200W + 400Wh | $300 | | 4G/2G modem | SIM7600 | $50 | | Enclosure (weatherproof) | IP65 | $70 | | Total per hub | | $1,300 | | Total (12 hubs) | | $15,600 |

Quantum Cloud Integration

The edge server connects to IBM Quantum Network via API:

  • Quantum job submission: 0.5 seconds (network latency)
  • Quantum computation: 0.01-7.4 minutes (depending on algorithm)
  • Result return: 0.5 seconds
  • Total quantum round-trip: 1-8 minutes

For real-time applications (fraud detection, price prediction), quantum results are cached at the edge for 15 minutes — subsequent queries return instantly.

Investment Model

| Component | Cost (USD) | |-----------|-----------| | 12 edge servers | $15,600 | | IBM Quantum access (partial) | $45,000 | | Edge-quantum pipeline development | $30,000 | | Solar power infrastructure | $3,600 | | Deployment and training | $10,000 | | Total | $104,200 |

Revenue model:

  • Edge AI services: $0.05/query x 50,000/day x 365 = $912,500/year
  • Quantum credit scoring (cached): $0.02/farmer x 9.5M = $190,000/year
  • Quantum price prediction (cached): $0.10/prediction x 1,000/day x 365 = $36,500/year
  • Total annual revenue: $1.14M
  • IRR: 994% | Payback: 1.1 months

Why Edge + Quantum?

Pure quantum computing requires $180K/year in cloud access. Pure edge computing can't do quantum. The hybrid model:

  • Deploys affordable edge servers at collection hubs ($1,300 each)
  • Uses quantum cloud only for critical computations (cached for reuse)
  • Delivers quantum-powered results to feature phones in 2 seconds
  • Works on 2G networks and solar power
  • Costs $104K total — 60% less than pure quantum

This is how quantum computing reaches rural Mozambique — not through quantum hardware in villages, but through edge servers that bridge the gap between feature phones and quantum clouds.
