The Farmer Data Dividend: MBC's Newest Innovation

The First Farmer-Owned Data Marketplace in Africa — Where Farmers Get Paid for Their Own Data

Everyone profits from farmer data except the farmer. Satellite companies sell imagery of farmer land. AgTech companies collect yield data. Banks use transaction patterns. Researchers publish papers. Carbon markets verify land. The farmer gets $0.

MBC is changing this. The Farmer Data Dividend is the first system where farmers OWN their data and GET PAID for it.

The Problem

| Who Uses Farmer Data | What They Do With It | What Farmer Earns | |---|---|---| | Satellite companies | Sell NDVI imagery of farmer land | $0 | | AgTech companies | Collect yield and input data | $0 | | Banks | Use transaction data for credit scoring | $0 | | Researchers | Publish papers using farmer data | $0 | | Governments | Collect registration data | $0 | | Carbon markets | Verify farmer land for credits | $0 |

Every farmer on MBC generates valuable data: NDVI crop health scores, soil analysis, yield predictions, mobile money patterns, weather data, carbon sequestration measurements, crop variety performance.

This data is worth money. And the farmer should get paid for it.

The Invention

MBC creates a Data Marketplace where:

  1. Farmer data is anonymized and aggregated (individual privacy protected)
  2. Buyers pay for access to datasets (DFIs, researchers, government, agribusiness)
  3. Revenue is split: 70% to farmers, 15% to MBC, 15% to data infrastructure fund
  4. Farmers receive dividends via M-Pesa
  5. Zero-knowledge proofs protect individual farmer privacy

The Math

| Scale | Farmers | Data Dividend/Farmer/Year | Total to Farmers | MBC Revenue (15%) | |---|---|---|---|---| | 10% adoption | 300,000 | $2 | $600,000 | $128,571 | | 50% adoption | 1,500,000 | $2 | $3,000,000 | $642,857 | | 100% adoption | 3,000,000 | $2 | $6,000,000 | $1,285,714 |

Why This Is an Invention

  • No farmer data marketplace exists in Africa
  • Apollo, ThriveAgric, UfarmX COLLECT data but never PAY for it
  • Google, Facebook, Amazon profit from user data — MBC pays farmers for theirs
  • This is the Data Union for African agriculture

Why It Fits MBC

| Theorist | How It Connects | |---|---| | Levitt | Visibility business — data makes farmers visible AND paid | | Porter | Infrastructure layer — data marketplace = new infrastructure | | Kotler 5.0 | Big data for humanity — farmers profit from data | | Diamandis | Abundance — new income stream from existing data | | Drucker | Innovation — new knowledge applied to old problem |

The Farmer Data Dividend. Because the farmer's data is the farmer's asset.
