MBC Digital EcoFAB: Berkeley Technology for Mozambique

Berkeley Lab built physical EcoFABs — controlled chambers studying root-microbe-soil interactions. They cost millions.

MBC built a Digital EcoFAB — a computational twin that simulates the same root-microbe-soil interactions for all 10 Mozambican provinces. It costs $0.

The Digital EcoFAB maps mycorrhizae density, beneficial bacteria, pathogen pressure, nitrogen fixation (19.6 kg/ha free fertilizer), and carbon sequestration potential (0.47 tons/ha/year).

It found that Mozambican soil microbes can reduce chemical fertilizer use by 21.5% — saving $17/hectare/year. At national scale: $76 million/year saved on chemicals.

Berkeley has EcoFABs. Cornell has Living Labs. USDA has Genesis. Mozambique has MBC Digital EcoFAB.

World-class science. Mozambican context. Zero cost.
