MBC Youth Agri-Tech Incubator: Training Mozambique's Next Generation of Digital Farmers

Mozambique has a 50.4% youth bulge — millions of young people who see farming as "backward." MBC trains them to become agri-tech service providers: drone operators, NDVI analysts, field agents, and digital extension officers. We're creating a new profession that didn't exist in Mozambique before, connecting motivated youth with smallholder farmers.

The Youth Challenge

The Numbers

  • Population under 25: 50.4% (17 million people)
  • Rural youth: 53% of rural population
  • Youth unemployment: 25-35% in urban areas, higher in rural
  • Perception of farming: 70% of youth see it as "work for old people"
  • Migration: Hundreds of thousands leave for Maputo, South Africa annually

The Opportunity

Mozambican youth are:

  • Digital natives — grew up with mobile phones
  • Entrepreneurial — already running informal businesses (airtime, trading)
  • Educated (relatively) — higher literacy than parents' generation
  • Connected — active on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram

The challenge: connect youth's digital skills and entrepreneurial energy with agriculture.

2500250,000$50M
31,000500,000$100M

By Year 5: 3,000 youth agents registering 1.5 million farmers and facilitating $300M in credit.

This is how Maputo Bridge Capital, founded by Anselmo Boaventura in Fort Worth, scales the Farmer Digital Identity — not with employees, but with trained local youth who earn a living making agriculture digital through technologies like drones, satellite data, and mobile platforms.

The Perceived Shift

When a young Mozambican sees their peer earning $3,000/year as a "digital field agent" — registering farmers, using aerial imagery, and managing cooperatives via mobile communication — the perception shifts:

"Farming is for old people" → "Agri-tech is the future."

The smallholder farmer's season

For the smallholder farmer, these digital advancements mean better organization and access during their growing season. By working with organizations like the COJAZ cooperative in Zambezia, farmers can receive verified documentation that helps facilitate the inputs they need, ensuring they can produce and eventually repay into the Community Fund to support others.

Frequently asked questions

What is the impact of a youth bulge on agricultural perception? With over 50% of the population being young, many view traditional farming as a backward practice, creating a need for modern technological integration to engage the next generation.

What are the primary roles for digital agri-tech agents? Key roles include field agents for registration, drone operators for aerial monitoring, and specialists in data analysis and cooperative management.

Why is digital identity important for farming? Digital identity allows farmers to be registered systematically, facilitating credit access and better management of cooperatives, which ultimately helps professionalize their farming business.

Maputo Bridge Capital connects sponsors with verified smallholder farmers like those in the COJAZ cooperative in Zambezia.
