Mozambique Cotton 2026: Production Targets and Export Investment Opportunities

Mozambique's Cotton Institute (Instituto de Algodão de Moçambique, IAM) oversees one of the country's most important cash crops. With 300,000 cotton farmers and ambitious production targets, cotton represents a major investment opportunity — especially as Asian textile demand grows.

Current State of Mozambican Cotton

| Metric | Value | |--------|-------| | Cotton farmers | ~300,000 | | Provinces growing cotton | 7 (Nampula, Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Zambézia, Sofala, Manica, Tete) | | Annual production | 50,000-70,000 tons (seed cotton) | | Average yield | 500-700 kg/ha | | Global average yield | 1,700-2,200 kg/ha | | Export value | $30-50M annually | | Farm-gate price | $0.45-0.60/kg | | Export price | $1.50-2.00/kg (lint) | | Ginning capacity | 40 ginneries (many need rehabilitation) |

2026 Production Targets

Mozambique's National Agriculture Development Plan (PNISA) and IAM have set targets to increase cotton production through:

  1. Area expansion: Increase from 200,000 to 300,000 hectares
  2. Yield improvement: From 700 kg/ha to 1,200 kg/ha (through improved seeds and extension)
  3. Ginning modernization: Rehabilitate 15-20 ginneries
  4. Organic cotton: Develop 10,000 hectares of certified organic cotton (premium market)
  5. Textile manufacturing: Attract investment in local textile production

If achieved, these targets would increase production to 360,000 tons of seed cotton — a 5-7x increase from current levels.

Why Cotton Matters for Mozambique

Cotton is a strategic crop because it provides:

  • Cash income for 300,000 farming families (often their only cash crop)
  • Employment in ginneries and potential textile factories
  • Export revenue for the national economy
  • Soil improvement (cotton stalks can be composted)
  • Byproducts (cottonseed oil, animal feed, cottonseed hulls)

Investment Opportunities

1. Cotton Ginning Rehabilitation ($100K-$1M, 20-30% IRR)

Mozambique has 40 ginneries, many built in the 1970s-80s and in need of rehabilitation. A rehabilitated gin can process 5-20 tons of seed cotton per day, producing:

  • Cotton lint (35% of weight) → sold to textile mills or exported at $1.50-2.00/kg
  • Cottonseed (62% of weight) → sold for oil pressing or animal feed at $0.30-0.50/kg
  • Waste (3%) → composted

2. Organic Cotton Production ($50K-$500K, 25-40% IRR)

Organic cotton commands a 20-50% premium over conventional cotton in international markets. Mozambique's low chemical fertilizer use (2 kg/ha) means many farms are already "organic by default" — they just need certification.

Investment covers:

  • Organic certification process ($5,000-$15,000)
  • Training farmers in organic methods (composting, natural pest control)
  • Establishing traceability (blockchain-verified organic chain)
  • Connecting to premium buyers (brands seeking organic cotton)

3. Cottonseed Oil Pressing ($50K-$200K, 30-50% IRR)

Cottonseed is currently sold as animal feed for $0.30/kg. But pressed into oil, it's worth $1.50/kg. A cottonseed oil pressing facility can:

  • Process 10 tons of cottonseed per day
  • Produce 1,500 liters of cottonseed oil (cooking oil)
  • Produce 7 tons of cottonseed cake (animal feed)
  • Serve local market (Mozambique imports cooking oil worth $120M/year)

4. Cotton-to-Textile Value Chain ($500K-$5M, 15-25% IRR)

The highest-value investment: turning raw cotton into fabric. Currently, Mozambique exports raw lint and imports finished textiles. A small textile mill could:

  • Spin cotton lint into yarn
  • Weave yarn into fabric
  • Supply local garment industry
  • Create 200-500 manufacturing jobs

How MBC Supports Cotton Investment

  • Satellite NDVI: Monitor cotton fields from space (cotton has distinct NDVI signature)
  • Credit scoring: Score cotton farmers using satellite + M-Pesa data
  • M-Pesa disbursement: Instant payment to cotton farmers and ginners
  • Collection hub network: 6 hubs can serve as cotton collection points
  • Commodity exchange: Buy/sell cotton orders on MBC exchange
  • Blockchain verification: Farm-to-export chain of custody
  • Illustrated courses: Module on composting improves cotton soil health
