M-Pesa Fees in Mozambique: What Investors and Donors Need to Know

When you invest $5,000 in a Mozambican farmer via MBC, $150 goes to M-Pesa transaction fees (3%). When you donate $25, about $0.75 goes to fees. This is the cost of moving money in a country where 95% of people don't have bank accounts.

Is it worth it? Yes — because the alternative is worse. Here's the complete breakdown.

M-Pesa Fee Structure in Mozambique

M-Pesa (operated by Vodacom Mozambique) charges fees based on transaction amount:

| Transaction Amount | Fee (MZN) | Fee (USD) | % | |-------------------|-----------|-----------|---| | 0-500 MZN ($0-8) | 3 MZN | $0.05 | ~1% | | 500-2,000 MZN ($8-32) | 10 MZN | $0.16 | ~0.5-2% | | 2,000-5,000 MZN ($32-79) | 25 MZN | $0.39 | ~0.5-1.2% | | 5,000-10,000 MZN ($79-157) | 50 MZN | $0.79 | ~0.5-1% | | 10,000-50,000 MZN ($157-787) | 150 MZN | $2.36 | ~0.3-1.5% | | 50,000+ MZN ($787+) | 300 MZN | $4.72 | ~0.6% |

Key insight: Fees are NOT percentage-based — they're tiered. This means larger transactions pay a lower percentage. A $5,000 transaction doesn't cost 3% — it costs closer to 0.5-1%.

How MBC Disburses Funds

When MBC disburses a $5,000 loan to a farmer:

  1. Investor sends $5,000 USD to MBC (via wire/Stripe)
  2. MBC converts USD to MZN at 63.5 MZN/USD = 317,500 MZN
  3. MBC sends MZN to farmer's M-Pesa account in batches (to minimize tier fees)
  4. Farmer receives funds on phone instantly
  5. Farmer uses M-Pesa to buy seeds, inputs, and pay labor

MBC's fee breakdown (per $1,000):

  • Capital to farmer: $700 (70%)
  • MBC operating margin: $90 (9%)
  • Loan loss reserve: $150 (15%)
  • M-Pesa transaction fee: $30 (3%)
  • FX conversion cost: $30 (3%)

The 3% M-Pesa fee covers:

  • Disbursement to farmer's M-Pesa account
  • Farmer's payments to seed/input suppliers via M-Pesa
  • Farmer's repayment via M-Pesa back to MBC
  • MBC's M-Pesa account maintenance

M-Pesa vs Alternatives

| Method | Cost | Time | Risk | Farmer Access | |--------|------|------|------|--------------| | M-Pesa | 1-3% | Instant | Low (traceable) | 25M accounts | | Bank transfer | 0.5-1% | 3-5 days | Medium | 5% have accounts | | Cash | $0 | Instant | High (theft, loss) | Universal | | Western Union | 5-8% | 1-2 hours | Low | Limited locations | | Cryptocurrency | 0.5-1% | 10-60 min | Medium | 1% have wallets |

M-Pesa wins because it's instant, traceable, and every farmer already has an account. The 1-3% fee is the cost of financial inclusion.

Mozambique's Three Mobile Money Providers

| Provider | Operator | Market Share | Fee Range | Best For | |----------|----------|-------------|-----------|----------| | M-Pesa | Vodacom | ~55% | 1-3% | Largest network | | e-Mola | Movitel | ~30% | 0.5-2% | Rural coverage | | mKesh | Tmcel | ~15% | 1-3% | Urban areas |

MBC uses all three providers — matching each farmer to their preferred network. If a farmer has M-Pesa, we send via M-Pesa. If they have e-Mola, we send via e-Mola. No farmer is excluded because of their mobile network.

Why 3% Is Actually Cheap

Consider the alternative: moving cash in Mozambique.

  • A farmer receiving $5,000 in cash must physically carry it home
  • Rural roads are unsafe — theft is common
  • Cash can't be traced — no proof of receipt
  • Cash can't be used remotely — farmer must travel to buy inputs
  • Cash has no consumer protection

M-Pesa's 3% fee provides:

  • Instant delivery to farmer's phone
  • Transaction receipt with reference ID
  • Ability to pay suppliers remotely
  • Blockchain verification (MBC logs every M-Pesa transaction)
  • Zero theft risk
  • Zero transport cost

For investors, the 3% fee is the price of certainty. You know exactly when, where, and to whom your money was delivered. Try doing that with cash.

How MBC Minimizes Fees

  1. Batch disbursements: Large amounts sent in smaller batches to stay in lower fee tiers
  2. e-Mola for rural: When available, e-Mola's lower fees are used for rural farmers
  3. Direct supplier payments: Instead of sending money to farmer who pays supplier, MBC can pay suppliers directly — reducing transaction count
  4. M-Pesa business account: MBC's business account has lower fees than personal accounts for bulk transactions

The Bigger Picture

Mozambique's mobile money infrastructure processes $35 billion annually across 25 million accounts. This infrastructure is the foundation of MBC's entire platform. Without M-Pesa, there would be no way to disburse loans to unbanked farmers. With M-Pesa, MBC can reach any farmer with a phone — which is virtually everyone.

The 3% fee isn't a cost. It's the price of financial inclusion for 25 million people who were previously invisible to the financial system.
