Quantum Error Correction: Building Reliable Quantum Infrastructure for Mozambique
From 1% to 0.0001% Error Rate
Current NISQ quantum computers have 0.1-1% error rates per gate operation. For financial applications requiring 99.99% reliability, this is unacceptable. Quantum error correction (QEC) codes reduce errors to 0.0001% — making quantum fintech reliable enough for mission-critical loan disbursement and fraud detection.
How QEC Works
QEC encodes one logical qubit across multiple physical qubits. The Surface Code — the most practical QEC scheme — uses a 2D lattice of physical qubits where local measurements detect and correct errors without disturbing the quantum computation.
Error reduction by code:
- No correction: 1% error rate
- Surface code (distance 3): 0.1% error rate
- Surface code (distance 5): 0.01% error rate
- Surface code (distance 7): 0.0001% error rate
