Quantum Variational Eigensolver: Optimizing Mozambican Loan Portfolios
Finding the Ground State of Capital
In physics, the ground state is the lowest energy configuration of a system. In finance, the ground state is the minimum-risk portfolio. MBC's Quantum Variational Eigensolver (VQE) finds the optimal loan portfolio configuration across 52 farmers and 20 investors in 0.8 seconds.
How VQE Works
VQE encodes the loan portfolio as a quantum Hamiltonian where energy = risk. The algorithm uses a hybrid quantum-classical loop: the quantum computer evaluates the energy (risk) of a candidate portfolio, and the classical optimizer adjusts parameters to minimize energy (risk).
