Value Chain Integration: Connecting Machambas to Agribusiness Supply Chains
A machamba is not a business — it's a plot of land. Transforming machambas into businesses requires integrating them into agribusiness supply chains. Here's the framework.
What Is Value Chain Integration?
Value chain integration means connecting smallholder farmers to every link in the agricultural supply chain:
Input suppliers → Farmers → Aggregators → Processors → Distributors → Retailers → Consumers
Currently, Mozambican smallholders are connected to NONE of these links formally. They buy inputs from informal traders, sell to passing buyers, and have no relationship with processors or retailers.
The Integration Framework
Level 1: Input Supply Integration
- Current: Farmers buy seeds/fertilizer from informal traders at retail prices
- Integrated: Cooperatives buy directly from input suppliers at wholesale prices (20-30% savings)
- MBC role: Group micro-loans finance bulk input purchases via M-Pesa
Level 2: Production Integration
- Current: Farmers plant whatever they have, whenever they can
- Integrated: Cooperatives plant based on market demand signals (buyer contracts)
- MBC role: AgriSignals SMS alerts on what crops are in demand and at what prices
Level 3: Aggregation Integration
- Current: Individual farmers transport small quantities to local markets
- Integrated: Cooperatives aggregate production and deliver bulk quantities to buyers
- MBC role: Digital marketplace matches supply with demand
Level 4: Processing Integration
- Current: All processing happens in cities; farmers sell raw produce
- Integrated: Regional processing hubs process cooperative production locally
- MBC role: Micro-loans for processing equipment, education on processing
Level 5: Distribution Integration
- Current: Multiple middlemen each take a margin
- Integrated: Cooperatives deliver directly to retailers, institutions, or exporters
- MBC role: Logistics platform coordinates farm-to-buyer delivery
Level 6: Retail/Export Integration
- Current: Mozambican produce sold unlabeled at local markets
- Integrated: Branded, packaged, quality-certified products sold at premium prices
- MBC role: AGOA export facilitation, quality certification assistance

The Integration Premium
| Integration Level | Farmer Price (MZN/kg) | vs. Current |
|---|---|---|
| Current (isolated) | 15 | Baseline |
| + Input supply | 15 (but costs -25%) | +25% net |
| + Market demand | 20 (right crop, right time) | +33% |
| + Aggregation | 25 (bulk sale) | +67% |
| + Processing | 35 (value addition) | +133% |
| + Direct retail | 40 (no middlemen) | +167% |
| + Export (AGOA) | 50 (premium market) | +233% |
Fully integrated farmer earns 233% more than isolated farmer — for the same production volume.

- Processamento: Centros regionais processam localmente (+133%)
- Distribuição: Entrega direta a retalhistas/exportadores (+167%)
- Retalho/Exportação: Produtos certificados a preços premium (+233%)
O Prémio de Integração
- Agricultor isolado: 15 MZN/kg
- Agricultor totalmente integrado: 50 MZN/kg
- Aumento: 233% pelo mesmo volume de produção
