The Context
Manica Soybean Cooperative is a soybean farm located in Chimoio, Manica province, Mozambique. 200-member soybean cooperative stopped fungal outbreaks before they spread, saving $140,000 in crop value and cutting pesticide costs by 85%.
The Challenge
A 200-member soybean cooperative in Manica province was losing 15% of annual yield — approximately $140,000 worth of crops — to late-detected fungal outbreaks. By the time farmers spotted disease visually, it had already spread across multiple plots. Manual scouting was labor-intensive and reactive rather than predictive.
The Implementation
MBC deployed weekly drone flights combined with Sentinel-2 satellite NDVI analysis across all 200 cooperative plots. AI models trained on 5 years of fungal outbreak data now predict disease probability 14 days before visible symptoms appear. When risk exceeds 40%, the system sends targeted M-Pesa alerts to affected farmers only, enabling precision fungicide application rather than blanket spraying.
