Water Management: Illustrated Guide for Non-Readers

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

Each step is ONE PICTURE. No reading needed. Look. Do.

Green = DO. Red X = DO NOT. Blue = water. Brown = earth.

STEP 1: NO WATER = DEATH

PICTURE: Hot yellow sun beating down. A brown plant lying flat on dry cracked earth. The plant has a red X.

MEANING: When rain stops, plants die. Without water management, your farm depends on luck.

STEP 2: THE BUCKET SYSTEM

PICTURE: A blue 20-liter bucket sitting on a wooden stand (3 sticks). From the bottom of the bucket, a black hose goes to plants. Small water drops fall from holes in the hose.

MEANING: One bucket. One hose. Water drips to roots. Cost: $8. Saves 80% water.

STEP 3: WATER THE ROOT, NOT THE LEAVES

PICTURE LEFT (green checkmark): Water drop falling directly on the brown root of a green plant. Plant looks healthy and tall.

PICTURE RIGHT (red X): Water sprayed on green leaves. Water bouncing off. Plant looks dry and sad.

MEANING: Put water where the plant drinks — at the roots. Not on the leaves.

STEP 4: CATCH THE RAIN

PICTURE: A house with a roof. Blue rain falling on the roof. Water flowing down the roof into a pipe. The pipe goes into a pit in the ground.

MEANING: When rain comes, catch it. Channel roof water into a pit. Store it for dry days.

STEP 5: COVER THE WATER

PICTURE: A pit full of water. Green leaves floating on top of the water. Sun above but the water stays cool underneath.

MEANING: Cover stored water with leaves. This stops the sun from stealing your water. Water lasts weeks longer.

STEP 6: THE RESULT

PICTURE LEFT (green checkmark): A green field with drip hoses between rows of healthy plants. Water bucket on stand. Everything green and alive.

PICTURE RIGHT (red X): A brown, dry field. Dead plants. No water system.

MEANING: Water management = green field, even in dry season. No water management = dead farm.
